Randall Duran Jaco, nestled in the heart of Costa Rica’s Central Pacific, had always caught my attention for its vibrant vibe and proximity to the ocean. But what truly made me fall in love with the place was a once-in-a-lifetime offshore fishing Costa Rica experience: an unforgettable tour aboard La Patrona, one of the best sportfishing charters in the region.
From the moment we left the dock, I knew this wasn’t just another tour. We headed about 30 miles offshore from Los Sueños, straight into a true offshore fishing Costa Rica paradise. Out there, the waters are home to some of the most powerful fish I’ve ever seen: yellowfin tuna, wahoo, marlin, and even the legendary sailfish.

What impressed me most was the trolling technique. I had never tried it before, but the crew on La Patrona made it easy. They explained everything with patience and were always by my side. They are true offshore sportfishing experts, and you can feel their passion in everything they do. My first strike was a wahoo—fast, strong, and absolutely thrilling. When I brought it on board, the whole crew cheered with me like we’d just won a championship. The energy on that boat was unbeatable.

But the highlight of the day was the marlin. Feeling its power on the line, watching it leap out of the water, battling a fish that lives more than 450 meters deep—there’s just nothing like it. It’s a technical challenge that takes strength, patience, and the right gear. Luckily, La Patrona had it all.
And as the crew explained, marlin, sailfish, and roosterfish are protected species in Costa Rica, so catch and release is mandatory. And I completely supported that. Watching how respectfully they handle these incredible creatures was one of the most inspiring parts of the trip.
